Utah's senior population

Utah’s senior population is growing rapidly. Between 2010 and 2020, the number of adults 65 and older increased by 53%, now representing 12% of the state’s total population. Of these seniors, 37% live alone.

Healthy Aging Program

The Healthy Aging Program offers chronic disease management and physical activity programs to help older adults age well.

Participants connect with others who face similar health challenges, creating a sense of community and support they may not otherwise have.

Chronic disease management

Chronic disease management classes are educational programs that help individuals with chronic health conditions take an active role in managing their health at no charge, or a low fee for participants.

One chronic disease management class participant shares:

"The instructors were absolutely fantastic! This has been an awesome class for me and my husband! I hope to continue to use each thing I've learned while taking this class. I looked forward to every single session so I'm sad it has to end, but I will take away so much from this class."

Physical activity programs

Physical activity programs are designed to help increase physical activity safely and comfortably.

One program is the Walk with Ease classes. Walk with Ease is an easy 6-week walking program that can be done with a group or on your own. Regular walking serves as an effective intervention against obesity. A participant shares:

"I loved this program. It helps me to stay active, it makes me feel good about myself. It really motivates me to be healthy and to take care of myself as a woman. While I walk I do my prayers and this helps me a lot spiritually. I lost weight with this program Thanks!"

Fall prevention classes

Another physical activity program is the fall prevention classes. One example is Tai Chi, which provides older adults with structured exercise routines designed to enhance strength, balance, and flexibility. This is particularly important, as falls pose a serious health risk, affecting one in four seniors each year. Tai Chi class participant shares:

"I have really enjoyed learning how to relax my mind and strengthen my body. I feel more confident and strong when doing the Tai Chi form. It helps me feel better about my body and self.”
